New Delhi:Punjabi singer-turned-actor Diljit Dosanjh is currently in the news for his film Satluj. The actor-singer has been thrust back into the spotlight over his citizenship amid talk of the movie. Reports surfaced in May that Diljit had received US citizenship in 2022.
At the time, the singer had no comment, but he recently responded to the rumors during an Instagram Live with fans. He chose to answer with humour, rather than answering directly.
The world's drama will never end: Diljit Dosanjh
Diljit’s movie Satluj was removed from ZEE5 OTT platform and during an Instagram Live chat, a fan suggested him to get a US Green Card. Diljit, responding to the fan, said, “I will take a card and paint it green. Other than everything else this will be a headline so I'm not saying anything. That's not the way it works. The drama of the world will never cease. But I think anyone should be able to go to any country without visa. The entire world should be one. That's okay with me, but it can't be, can it?"
Diljit asks, 'What do you guys think of me?'
In another live interaction, a fan jokingly asked Diljit to call US President Donald Trump and help everyone get US citizenship. Diljit laughed at the request and said, "What do you guys think I am? I am only an artist. How could I ask him to take care of citizenship problems? His daughter is on my tail but I’ve never even talked to her. I never ask anyone for favors. If it's going to happen, it'll happen. If it’s not meant to be, it’s not.
Report claimed Diljit had acquired US citizenship
Diljit had acquired the US citizenship in 2022, The Indian Express had reported earlier. The report further said that the singer’s wife Sandeep Kaur is a US citizen. Diljit was alleged to have chosen a five-bedroom bungalow in a posh California neighbourhood as his residence.
About Satluj
'Satluj' (earlier 'Punjab 95') is based on the life of Punjab human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Khalra investigated the alleged cremation of nearly 25,000 unclaimed bodies between 1984 and 1994. The film tracks his abduction in 1995 and the conviction of four Punjab Police personnel for his kidnapping and murder in 2005. Diljit plays Khalra in the film.
Originally, Satluj was scheduled for a theatrical release but after a battle of close to four years with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), it was finally released on ZEE5. The movie, however, was taken off the streaming service two days after its debut. Along with Diljit, the film also stars Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in pivotal roles. It is directed by Honey Trehan.
