Washington:Washington:
The spokesperson's statement came in response to queries from the Indian media about the controversy created by Trump reposting on social media comments by radio show host Michael Savage that referred to India, China and some other countries as "hellholes".
The US says India is a great country. The US embassy's spokesperson said, "The President has said, 'India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top.'"
The spokesperson didn't say when or where Trump said that India is a great country.
MEA's response to Trump's commentOn Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded to reports that US President Trump had shared a video that made fun of India and China. They said they had "seen some reports" but didn't say anything else.
Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the MEA, said at a weekly media briefing, "We've seen some reports." That's where I'll stop.
What is the "hellhole" row?Savage said in the video that current immigration laws are bad because they let people take advantage of them by coming to the US late in their pregnancy to get citizenship for their kids.
Savage said in the video that these kinds of things create a loophole that lets "a baby here become an instant citizen." Then, families move from places like "China or India or some other hellhole on the planet."
The "Commentary Donald J. Trump Posts From Truth Social" account, which is dedicated to reposting the President's social media activity, brought attention to the footage, which was first shown on the Newsmax show The Savage Nation.
Savage said in the clip that he was very angry with the legal system. He said, "Today's short, brief discussion will be about the arguments I just heard before the Supreme Court about birthright citizenship." I was a little angry while listening to the arguments because all I heard was legalese going back and forth.
He said that legal advocacy groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) shouldn't have a say in immigration policy. "The person making the case for letting illegal immigrants flood America to change the demographics forever was a Chinese American who looks like a typical ACLU lawyer to me. Savage said, "Very smart, very evil, and very sneaky."
"The ACLU is the snake's head. "They've always been there, and there they were again trying to make America a cesspool," he said.
The commentator contended that the matter transcends legal interpretation and ought to be resolved through public opinion, proposing that birthright citizenship be subjected to a national referendum.
