Delhi:The Central Government has banned the controversial web series Lawrence of Punjab, the Punjab and Haryana High Court learned during a recent hearing.The documentary was supposed to come out on April 27.
The development happened because of a public interest lawsuit filed by Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the president of the Punjab Congress. The Government of India told the court during the proceedings that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had acted against the series after looking into the facts.
The Centre says that the decision to ban the web series was based on facts because people were worried about what it contained. As part of the ongoing hearing in the PIL, which asked for help with the streaming of the series, the matter was brought before the court.
The court was told that the Ministry had looked over the material and then put the ban in place, which stopped the show from being shown for a short time. The next steps in the case will be decided based on what happens next.
According to an official letter from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, "Further, Punjab Police has informed that the content contains dramatized portrayals, real-life footage, and narrative elements which lead to the glorification and amplification of organized crime and criminal elements." It is also said that the documentary could have a bad effect on young people by making organized crime seem normal or romantic; hurt ongoing law enforcement efforts against gangsterism; and upset public order, which would make the law and order situation in the State worse. The Punjab Police has said that because gangster-related issues are very sensitive in Punjab and this kind of content could cause strong public reactions, the release of the series is likely to make things worse andIt is also said that the documentary could have a bad effect on young people by making organized crime seem normal or romantic; weaken ongoing law enforcement efforts against gangsterism; and disturb public order, which would make the law and order situation in the State worse. According to a press release from the makers, "Lawrence of Punjab traces the journey of a criminal identity through the lens of culture, systems, and visibility. The series shows how aspiration, power, and perception come together to create a new-age digital syndicate, from student politics and music to ideology and media amplification. Lawrence Bishnoi is an important case study in this ecosystem. The story goes beyond the individual to look at the bigger cultural and social picture, focusing on the effects.
