New Delhi:India has submitted a list of 30 probable players to the Indian Olympic Association for the upcoming Asian Games. One of the biggest talking points from the preliminary group is the inclusion of 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who was a revelation in the 2026 campaign and forced his way into the discussions of national selection. The teenager has now put himself in the frame for the continental event in Aichi-Nagoya after compiling 776 runs in 16 matches.
Importantly, the Asian Games are scheduled from September 19 to October 4, with the men’s cricket competition taking place from September 24 to October 3. India will also host West Indies in a white-ball assignment from September 27 to October 17 with three ODIs and five T20Is in the same period.
With two parallel commitments on the horizon, the BCCI has already decided to field separate squads for the two engagements. That planning has informed some high-profile selection decisions.
T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI captain missing from Asian Games longlist India will rely on Gill to lead them in the ODI leg against the West Indies and he will miss out on the continental tournament.
Suryakumar out of the reckoningSuryakumar’s name not being in the Asian Games longlist does not come as a surprise as he is not in the race for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics anymore, a PTI report said. has been retained among the probables. There are indications that his focus is likely to remain on the ODI format as India build towards next year’s World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
The leadership of the Asian Games squad is yet to be decided. With Suryakumar out of the fray, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have emerged as the front-runners to lead the side.
Meanwhile, Harshit Rana has been recalled after suffering an injury against New Zealand earlier this year. He is one of the first set of pace options along with Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna. Spin resources are also being evaluated. Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Harsh Dubey have all been named in the probables list.
