Kampala:General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the head of Uganda's army, is in the news again for making strange and often sexist comments about women that have gotten a lot of attention around the world. His most recent comments have sparked more criticism around the world. General Kainerugaba has made two very unusual requests of Turkey. His first request is for $1 billion, which he says Uganda owes for its long-standing military presence in Somalia and its fight against Islamic militant groups. His second request, which has been criticized, was for Turkey to give him what he called "the most beautiful woman in that country" so that she could be his wife.
People are very angry about what the Ugandan commander said, but this isn't the first time he's said something strange. In 2022, he said in public that he would give Italy 100 cows if they let him marry their Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. Now, years later, Kainerugaba has started doing the same thing again by asking for a Turkish woman to marry him.
If Turkey doesn't follow through, there could be a breakdown in diplomacy.Kainerugaba has told Ankara that if they don't meet his demands within 30 days, there will be serious diplomatic consequences. He has threatened to close Turkey's embassy in Kampala and keep Turkish Airlines from flying into Ugandan airspace. He said that Turkey could close Uganda's embassy in Ankara in response and that Uganda would not hesitate to cut ties. "For Turkey, it's a very simple deal. They either pay us or I shut down their embassy here. They can also close our embassy in Turkey in return. "Not a problem," he wrote on X.If Turkey does not address our problems, we will sever our diplomatic relations within 30 days," he added.
Claims of unfair profits in SomaliaOn April 11, the Army Chief, who is also the son of Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, posted a lot on X. He said that Turkey was making money by running major infrastructure, ports, and airports in Mogadishu, while Uganda was responsible for security in the African Union missions against Al-Shabab militants for almost twenty years. He asked for the billion dollars as a "security dividend" and then added that he wanted a Turkish bride. He wrote, "I want the most beautiful woman in Turkey for a wife, on top of the $1 billion."
Kainerugaba tells Ugandans not to go to Turkey.Kainerugaba called the relationship with Turkey "serious" and said that things could soon get worse than just on social media. He told people in Uganda not to go to Turkey "for your own safety." "Stop playing games on Twitter. We will soon end our diplomatic ties with them. "Who needs a friend who keeps stabbing you in the back?" he wrote.
A pattern of crazy public statementsThis argument is just one more thing that Kainerugaba has said that is sure to get people talking. He is known for making bold statements about geopolitics in the region. In 2022, he even offered 100 Ankole cows, which he called "the most beautiful cows on earth," to marry Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
