Elections in Bangladesh are won by the BNP, and Tarique Rahman will become the next prime minister. After a 20-year hiatus, the BNP returned to power in the parliamentary elections, securing 209 of the 297 seats. 68 seats were won by the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, which is frequently seen as having strong ties to Pakistan.
After living in self-exile in London for 17 years, Tarique Rahman has become the new face of Bangladesh, and his father's party is about to regain power after a 20-year hiatus. He will not take the prime ministerial oath.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League was not allowed to run in the elections. Voter turnout for the elections was 59.44%.
The 13th parliamentary elections were viewed as especially important because they followed a protracted period of political unpredictability, instability, and a precarious security situation. After student-led protests ended Hasina's 15-year rule in August 2024, the nation saw widespread unrest, including attacks on minorities.
