DhakaThe 18-month tenure of the interim government that took power following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime in August 2024 came to an end on Tuesday when BNP leader Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh's new prime minister. In a break with long-standing custom, President Mohammed Shahabuddin took the oath of office to 60-year-old Rahman at the Jatiya Sangsad's South Plaza rather than Bangabhaban.
Rahman, the son of late President Ziaur Rahman and former Premier Khaleda Zia, came home two months ago after 17 years of self-exile in London. For the next five years, he will be the prime minister.
Rahman was chosen earlier in the day by the members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to lead the parliamentary party. At the ceremony, which was attended by a number of leaders from nearby nations, including India and Pakistan, President Shahabuddin also administered the oath to the newly appointed Cabinet members.
Following a period of turbulent political void, instability, and precarious security, the BNP won 209 out of 297 seats in the 13th Parliamentary elections held on February 12; the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats. The Awami League was prohibited from running for office.
