Dhaka:According to officials on Saturday, violence occurred in the town of Munshiganj, Bangladesh, on Friday, leaving at least one person dead and ten others injured. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, won a landslide victory in the nation's parliamentary elections, which were announced the day before.
Students at Dhaka University organized a protest in response to the violence, calling for the victim to receive justice. Videos of students shouting slogans and demanding to know who is to blame for the deaths in Munshiganj have also gone viral. In the video, the students could be heard saying, "Direct action is needed against the murderers."
More troops have been sent in, and the town's security has been increased.
Reports state that during Thursday's voting, a crude bomb explosion occurred at a Munshiganj polling station. Supporters of competing candidates were involved in the explosion, which took place at the Makhati Gurucharan High School polling station in the Mollakandi Union of Sadar upazila. Authorities called the incident a "minor incident," despite the fact that it briefly interrupted voting.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammed Mominul Islam of the Munshiganj Sadar police station told news agency ANI that "supporters of BNP-backed candidate Kamruzzaman (Sheaf of Paddy symbol) and independent candidate Mohiuddin were involved."
Violence plagued a number of other districts.More than 80 people were injured when violence broke out in multiple districts following the conclusion of the polling and the announcement of the results, according to a report by Bangladesh's Prothom Alo. According to the report, clashes and retaliatory attacks in Bagerhat on Thursday and Friday injured 35 people. In a similar vein, during the same time period, violence in Jhenaidah, Kishoreganj, Meherpur, Patuakhali, and Dinajpur injured fifty people.
These attacks also targeted the homes of a number of BNP leaders. Security personnel are keeping an eye on the situation, and the party has urged citizens to cooperate with the police in upholding law and order. Bagerhat Superintendent of Police (SP) Hasan Chowdhury was quoted by Prothom Alo as saying, "We have zero tolerance for any criminal acts, and police operations are ongoing to apprehend those involved."
The BNP won 209 of the 300 seats in the 13th Bangladeshi parliamentary elections, which saw a voter turnout of 59.44%. After more than 20 years, the party has now returned to power. Only 68 seats were won by the Islamist ideology group Jamaat-e-Islami. Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister, and the Awami League were prohibited from running in the elections.
