. Despite this, they remain seventh in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings. Pakistan, meanwhile, moved to the bottom of the standings. They have amassed 16 points from seven matches and a PCT of 19.05 after suffering another heavy defeat in the championship cycle.
Australia, in the meantime, continue to occupy first place with a PCT of 77.78, while South Africa are second at 75 PCT. England’s position means the Leeds victory did little to alter their standing despite the emphatic nature of the result.
The remaining two Tests against Pakistan could provide England with an opportunity to improve their position. They would hope to keep up with the momentum and improve their standings to keep themselves alive in the race to qualify for the final.
Pakistan face the opposite challenge. The Babar Azam-led side is now facing the embarrassment of being at the bottom of the table after yet another subpar show in all three departments of the game. They would hope to bounce back in the remaining two games in order to improve their standings, but the side is already out of the finals race.
WTC updated points table:Teams | PCT | Australia | 77.78 | South Africa | 75.00 | New Zealand | 72.22 | Bangladesh | 66.67 | India | 53.33 | Sri Lanka | 33.33 | Engalnd | 29.76 | West Indies | 20.83 | Pakistan | 19.05 | What happened in Headingley Test? The Headingley result also marked a winning beginning to Root’s second stint as England’s Test captain. The hosts controlled the contest with both bat and ball and wrapped up the match inside three days. Pakistan’s batting proved decisive in the outcome. They managed only 171 in their first innings, leaving England with a substantial opportunity to take control of the Test.
The hosts made full use of that advantage before their bowlers completed the job. Four of their batters scored half-centuries each, while in the third innings, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer claimed three wickets each to get the job done. Pakistan failed to produce any meaningful performance and were eventually dismissed for 135.
The result gave Root a convincing start to his return as captain and extended Pakistan’s difficult run in the current WTC cycle.
