Delhi, New Delhi:As part of a calculated attempt to capitalize on India's sizable cricket market, Cricket Australia (CA) is reportedly looking into the possibility of holding a Big Bash League (BBL) game there the following season. The action is in line with CA's larger strategy to increase the BBL's commercial presence in India before at least two of its eight franchises are possibly sold, according to a Sen Cricket report.
According to the report, CA's Head of Competition Development and Strategy Margot Harley and Head of Business Operations Phil Rigby recently visited India to evaluate the logistics and viability of holding an offshore match, with Chennai emerging as a potential location. The program demonstrates CA's intention to strengthen relationships with Indian stakeholders and draw in potential investors."As talks about the logistics of an offshore game heat up, Phil Rigby, head of business operations, and Margot Harley, head of competition development and strategy, took a plane to India," the report stated.
Discussions are confirmed by a TNCA official
Meanwhile, a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association official has attested to the fact that the talks happened. "Yes, Cricket Australia sent two representatives. The possibility of one BBL game per season was discussed with senior office-bearers, according to a senior TNCA office-bearer who was quoted by PTI.
"They conducted a reconnaissance after hearing positive things about the MA Chidambaram Stadium. They are considering other locations as well, but TNCA is unable to commit until we receive an order from the BCCI. The official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the parent body must determine whether to approve this proposal.
For the suggested game, the Perth Scorchers are probably going to be one team.Perth Scorchers seem like a sensible option to play in India, according to the report, "given their time zone and an openness from WACA officials to consider offers from wealthy Indian business figures." A deal is far from final, though, as approval from a number of parties, including the BCCI and broadcasters, would be required," the statement stated.
With six championships, the Perth Scorchers are the BBL's most successful team and it continues to be one of the top T20 leagues in the world.
The Perth Scorchers broke MI and CSK's world records to win the title in 2025–2026.After defeating the Sydney Sixers in the 15th season final on January 25, the Perth Scorchers were crowned the 2025–26 Big Bash League champions. In the final, the Scorchers put on an outstanding all-around display at Perth Stadium, chasing down the Sixers for a pitiful 133. With their victory, the Scorchers broke a significant cricket world record that they shared with teams like the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Trinbago Knight Riders of the Caribbean Premier League.
This was the sixth BBL victory for the Scorchers, which now leads all franchise T20 leagues in addition to the tournament. Prior to their most recent BBL triumph, they were tied with teams like CSK, MI, and TKR, all of whom have five league titles.
