New DelhiThe 29-year-old comes into the match with a lot of attention and possibly some pressure due to the hype following an incredible Ranji Trophy in which Aquib Nabi finished as the top wicket-taker with 60 wickets. With former cricket players like Sourav Ganguly supporting him, he is already being linked to the India Test team. However, Nabi has clarified that the current objective is to perform well for DC and win the coveted trophy.
"I have no control over the red-ball selection; it is a result of your performance during the domestic season. I don't pay attention to things that are out of my control. I'm only thinking about the IPL right now, and I want to help the Delhi Capitals win their first IPL championship," Nabi stated in a press conference.
Notably, Nabi's ascent has been based on steady performances in domestic cricket, where he was instrumental in Jammu and Kashmir's Ranji Trophy winning streak. His effectiveness in bowling longer spells in the format has garnered attention, as has his ability to deliver with both bat and ball. One of the most promising fast-bowling prospects on the domestic circuit, he is expected to make his India debut in June's one-off Test match against Afghanistan.
"I am not paying attention to the conversations that are taking place. I'm totally focused on getting ready and playing good cricket by utilizing my strengths right now," Nabi stated.
I wanted to demonstrate my suitability for this level: NabiAlthough Nabi doesn't seem interested in addressing that narrative at this time, his domestic statistics have also heightened conversations about his preparedness for the global arena. Notably, he was purchased at auction for a substantial sum of INR 8.4 crore, which Nabi claims won't bother him too much because his objective is to establish himself at the top level.
"Prior to the auction, I had no idea what the price would be. All I wanted to do was play at this level. I wanted to demonstrate my suitability for this level. The all-rounder continued, "I just want to concentrate on doing well in the IPL and the opportunities that come my way."
Nabi might be given the new ball duties since Mitchell Starc is anticipated to miss the tournament's early stages. He demonstrated a direct approach to his work, emphasizing discipline and execution.
"I'll be using my strengths to swing the ball both ways while keeping things simple. I want to help the Delhi Capitals make early progress with the new ball by doing that," he said.
