County Championship clash: Manav Suthar equals 131-year-old record against Glamorgan

The 26-year-old left-arm spinner from Rajasthan took three wickets for no runs in the Division One match at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. His performances were the bedrock of Warwickshire’s dominant innings-and-257-run victory.

Warwickshire batted first and scored 391 in their first innings. Glamorgan replied with 69 all out in their first innings and 65 all out in their second.

Suthar's eye-watering figures put him in the company of a feat not seen in first class cricket since 1895. He became only the second player to take at least one wicket in each innings of a match without conceding any runs. The only other occasion was for English cricketer Tom Hayward, who took three wickets in six balls for Leicestershire against Surrey at The Oval in 1895.

Meanwhile Suthar’s contribution came in starkly contrasting bursts. In Glamorgan’s first innings he bowled just three balls, the last of which took the wicket of No 11 batter Mir Hamza. He was much more involved in the second innings. The spinner, introduced in the 24th over, began with a maiden. The bowler then struck twice in his next over, getting the wicket of keeper-batter Chris Cooke and No.10 Jamie McIlroy. He took both these wickets in a space of four balls and ended up with a maiden.

In a wonderful year for the bowler, who has quickly established himself as a frontline Test spinner for India, the performance adds another feather to Suthar’s cap. He made his Test debut against Afghanistan taking seven wickets including one six-wicket haul. He then took 16 wickets in two Tests during India’s 1-0 series win in Sri Lanka in August.

Three days after the series had finished Suthar was off to England to continue his County Championship campaign with Warwickshire. He’s been very impressive with 21 wickets so far, including a five-wicket haul against Somerset.

Warwickshire meanwhile lead Division One on 184 points from 12 matches, with Somerset 11 points adrift. With the title race drawing to a close, Suthar is likely to be back for the Bears’ last two matches against Essex and Leicestershire.
