US Open 2026 final Ben Shelton vs Alexander Zverev The two stars met at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on 13th September and it was with a marvelous performance in the summit clash.
Note that Zverev got off to a good start to the game, as the German took the first set 6-3. He then built on that start, and took the second set 7-6 (7-2). Ben Shelton was heading for a straight-sets win, but made a powerful return to the game and took a set off Zverev.
Shelton took the third 5-7 but finally went under as Zverev took the fourth 6-2 to claim his very first US Open title. It is interesting to note that Zverev began the season in search of his first Grand Slam and in the space of one campaign the German star has been able to win two.
He had won the French Open earlier in the year and had also won the US Open. Interestingly, Zverev is the fourth man in the Open era to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same campaign, after Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas and Jannik Sinner.
Zverev spoke after winning the titleHaving won the title, Zverev took to the center of the court and went straight over to Ben Shelton’s corner to congratulate them on the campaign they had put in. He also said how amazing the atmosphere was to play in and also thanked the crowd for their support.
“Eric [Butorac], first year as a tournament director, congratulations to you for putting on such an amazing event. Sorry, wrong winner this year! I did my job, but thank you so much. You were amazing. “I know that the crowd today, 99.9 per cent of the people wanted Ben to win, so I’m very sorry, first of all,” Zverev said after the match.
But second, it was a great atmosphere to play in. And even when I knew the crowd was against me, it was always a very fair crowd. We as players like it. “You guys brought the energy and the noise and we really thank you guys for that,” he said.
