Solomon Pappaiya, a Tamil scholar, actor and renowned orator, has passed away at the age of 90. He breathed his last in Madurai on Friday, September 11. He was known for his contributions to Tamil literature and cinema and was remembered by his fans and members of the film fraternity following his death.

Indian choreographer and film director Prabhudeva remembered Solomon Pappaiya and paid tribute to him on his handle X. Sharing a picture, he wrote, "Deeply saddened at the passing of Solomon Pappayya Sir. A great voice of Tamil, remembered always.

Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay also paid a heartfelt tribute to the late scholar-actor Solomon Pappaiya and recalled him. In his X post, he said in Tamil, which reads in English, “I am overcome with deep grief and agony on hearing about the demise of Tamil scholar, Professor Solomon Pappiah who brought the greatness of Tamil and the way of life of Tamils to the notice of the world through forum platforms.
He said, "Professor Solomon Pappiah has not only done it with his humorous speeches, his vast knowledge of Tamil and his capacity to convey social thoughts to the people in a simple way, but has also converted the platforms from pastime events to thought-provoking platforms – his contribution there is monumental. His death is a great loss to the Tamil speaking world which cannot be replaced. I convey my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all the family members, relatives, friends and Tamil lovers who are grieving over his demise.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi posted a picture of Solomon Pappaiya, and said on X, “A golden era of the Tamil stage has gone. Mr. Solomon Pappiah who took the forum from house to house, speaking Tamil simply and beautifully to make it understood, is no more. It is a great loss to Tamil and the Tamil people. His words will live in Tamil directly. My condolences to his family.”
South superstar Rajinikanth tweeted: "I pray to the divine that the soul of the great Tamil luminary, Prof Solomon Pappaiah, who brought the literary forum from the realm of the educated to the common folk in a populist manner, attains peace.
Who was Solomon Pappaiya?
For the uninitiated, Solomon Pappaiya was a prominent Tamil scholar, cultural icon and television personality from Tamil Nadu, India. In his long academic career, Pappaiya was a Tamil professor at The American College in Madurai for more than three decades.
He has also made cameo appearances in films like Mudhalvan, Boys and Sivaji: The Boss. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2021 for his contribution to Literature and Education.
